Media Studies and Material History in Japan

I am a historian of the material culture of disability and media in 20th century and contemporary Japan. I am currently a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Davis. My current book project explores disability and Japanese videogames.

I earned my PhD at Stanford University, where I received a Fulbright award to support my research. My doctoral dissertation investigated the material history of assistive technologies for Deaf and hearing impaired persons and their relationship with music.
